HM Revenue & Customs' Investigations
HM Revenue & Customs is entitled to enquire into your tax return to check you are paying the right amount of tax regardless of your size or status. We understand that a tax investigation can be extremely traumatic and disruptive. Regrettably, for the unprepared or ill-advised, it can be a minefield and can lead to tax, interest and penalties being unecessarily paid.
Expert advice is therefore essential to help protect your personal and your business interests. This is an area that we have experience in and are happy to talk to you regarding concerns you may have. Contact us today for a free and confidential initial meeting.
HMRC Offshore Disclosure Facilities:
If you have any undisclosed income or gains from assets or investments held in certain offshore jurisdictions, HM Revenue & Customs are offering the opportunity for taxpayers to bring their UK tax affairs up to date under the best possible terms.
The disclosure facilities currently running include: -
The Leichtenstein Disclosure Facility
Open until 5 April 2016
The British Crown Dependencies - IOM, Jersey & Guernsey Facility
Open until 30 September 2016
If you have undisclosed income or gains in the above places and do not take advantage of the above opportunities then you may face the threat of higher penalties and possible criminal proceedings. With HM Revenue & Customs entering into 'tax information' exchange agreements with the IOM and other countries to exchange data on taxpayers, these disclosure facilities offer an ideal opportunity to get up to date, so don't delay making any disclosures.
Please contact us today if you have any concerns about how this may affact you or if you require assistance making the necessary disclosures.
Campaigns & Task Forces:
HM Revenue & Customs are setting up dedicated task forces to target specific sectors across the UK in their ongoing crack down on tax evasion. The perceived success of previous HM Revenue & Customs' campaigns also means that these will continue and enable certain taxpayers to voluntarily come forward and bring their tax affairs up to date. The current campaigns include: -
Tax return 'catch up' campaign:
This offers individuals who have not submitted their returns for any years up to 2011/12, but had received a return or notice to complete a return to come forward and pay the outstanding tax.
Individuals can register from 9 July 2013 and have until 15 October 2013 to submit returns and pay any tax or national insurance they owe.
Let property campaign:
This is an opportunity for landlords of residential properties in the lettings market to get up to date with their tax affairs and correct any previous errors that may have occured. There is currently no closure date for this campaign.
Health & Wellbeing campaign:
This is an opportunity for healthcare professionals to bring their tax affairs up to date and receive the best possible terms.
HM Revenue & Customs must be notified of your disclosure by 31 December 2013 and the tax must be paid by 6 April 2014.
The current task forces include:
- Security firms in London and the South East;
- Construction industry in London;
- Hidden wealth in the Midlands;
- Second hand motor trade in the Midlands;
- Road transport industry in South East and South;
- Undeclared income in South East and South; and
- Fraudulent VAT claims in North East.
If you have any concerns regarding your current tax position in relation to the above or any other matters, please contact us for a no obligation consultation.
